The Girl’s College Development Program is designed for high caliber players that want to play at the collegiate level! This 6-week training program will consist of three basic sections;

Skill Development

Power Skating
To play at the collegiate level, you must be an exceptional skater. Developing a more powerful and explosive stride is critical in the continuing development of any great hockey player. During this portion of your training, the Ice Works staff will teach, and reinforce proper skating techniques, ensuring that each player develops a stronger foundation. Through the execution of some high-level skating drills, players will improve their quickness, balance, speed and agility making them more fluid and powerful skaters.

Stickhandling
As the speed of the game increases at the collegiate level players need to react quicker than ever. Developing a quick stick is an essential tool in reaching and playing at the collegiate level. During the 6-week Girls College Development Training Program players will be trained under extreme pressure forcing them to react faster and quicker than ever. Players will use devices such as the “Speed Deke Trainer”, “Attack Triangles”, “Extreme Dangler Pro” and the “Give-n-Go” passer to challenge and develop quicker hands. Players will also work on enhancing these skills during our high tempo flow drills and also in confined spaces during our small games portion of the program.

Shooting
What separates some highly skilled hockey players from others, is their ability to take a quick and powerful shot! During every training session at the Girl’s College Development Training Program, players will take a minimum of 50 -100 shots on net. Throughout the entire training program, players will be analyzed on their current shooting form and the Ice Works staff will gradually address the players weaknesses in a progressive, step by step approach that will make it easy for them to master the fundamentals of shooting. Proper weight transformation, hand placement, shoulder alignment and puck positioning are some of the essential components that we will be working on consistently.

High Tempo Full Ice Drills

In preparation for the collegiate level, players need to be ready for elite level drills. During this portion of the training program, players will be forced to think and react quickly while performing multiple tasks simultaneously. All of these action-packed drills are designed to challenge players under extreme conditions. Offensively, players will be pressured to react in milliseconds, their ability to make smart hockey decisions under pressure is the difference between a great collegiate player and an average one. Defensively, knowing how to play the game correctly in the neutral and defensive zone is critical in the evaluation of all hockey players. These intense full ice drills will incorporate defensive aspects of the game – making players engage in all aspects of the game. Many of the high tempo full ice drills used at the Girl’s College Development Training Program are some of Bobby Butler’s favorite drills while playing for the Ottawa Senators, NJ Devils, Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators.

Competitive Small Area Games

The game of ice hockey has evolved throughout the years, the game is quicker and more mentally challenging than ever. In order to play at the collegiate level, players must have a strong hockey IQ. Through the use of small area games, players will learn to develop a greater sense of vision, anticipation and wherewithal on the ice. These small area games will help players to make smarter hockey decisions during tremendous chaos. Additionally, players will develop better puck handling skills under extreme pressure, improve their skating and their ability to escape opponents in confined spaces. Finally, players will increase their confidence during these mini games to become more impactful during regular season games.
