John Butler Scholarship

The John Butler “High Expectations” award is in honor of one of most influential coaches in Coach Payne’s life. Over a 10 year coaching span, coach Payne teams (North Middlesex H.S. & Groton Dunstable Regional H.S.) battled in some of the most competitive games vs coach Butlers (Marlboro Panthers). Both coaches eventually winning State Championships at their respectively high schools in 2005 (Marlboro) and 2012 (Groton Dunstable Regional H.S.). John was elected into the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches Association (MSHCA) Hall of Fame in 2012, for compiling an impressive coaching record of 341-187-51. Besides his tremendous record, John won the Division 3 State Championship in 2005 and was a finalist in 2004 as well. During John’s 25 seasons at Marlboro High School, he had 5 District Championships, 3 Quinn Conference and 6 Roy Conference Championships, and qualified 23 times for the MIAA Tournament! To amass such accolades, John had to set high expectations not only for himself, but also his players and three sons John Jr, Bob and Alex. John knew that too succeed the bar had to be set at a higher level than their competitors.

The John Butler “High Expectations” award will go to that camper that is not necessary the best player during the “Full Throttle” clinics or the Ice Works “Elite Hockey” Schools, but is the hardest working and most determined player on and off the ice.
